Place chicken, stock, onions, celery and turnip in a large pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, covered for about 1 hour. Remove chicken from pot and set aside. Add carrots, barley and pepper and simmer an additional 30 minutes. In the meantime, remove skin and fat from chicken and cut into small pieces.
